Fine Art Print : Central region of the Milky Way
Fine Art Prints from Science Photo Library
Central region of the Milky Way
Central region of the Milky Way. The Milky Way is our own galaxy, seen from within. This gives it the appearance of a band of light crossing the sky. It is brightest in the direction of the centre of the galaxy, which is at centre in this image. Huge clouds of dust blocking the light from more distant stars are responsible for the dark patches. The zodiacal constellations Scorpius (right) and Sagittarius (left) are partly seen. The bright star by the lower right edge is Antares (Alpha Scorpii), a red supergiant that is the 16th brightest star in the night sky

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the central region of our very own Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way, a magnificent band of light that stretches across the sky, is seen here in all its glory. At the center of this image lies the brightest part of our galaxy, where countless stars twinkle and shine. However, amidst this celestial beauty, we can also observe dark patches caused by massive clouds of dust obstructing the light from distant stars. These cosmic dust clouds add an element of mystery to this scene. In addition to showcasing the grandeur of our galaxy, this print reveals two zodiacal constellations: Scorpius on the right and Sagittarius on the left. Partially visible within these constellations is Antares (Alpha Scorpii), a brilliant red supergiant star that holds rank as the 16th brightest star in our night sky. As you gaze upon this mesmerizing image, you are transported into a world beyond imagination—a realm where starry lanes and galactic wonders converge. Let your mind wander among these celestial bodies and appreciate their awe-inspiring beauty captured by Science Photo Library's lens.
