Polridmouth Bay and Gribbin Head with Daymark Tower, Tywardreath, Cornwall. 1904

View of Polridmouth Bay and Gribbin Head. The view shows the Gribbin Tower, a square beacon erected by Trinity House in 1832. It was never lighted but is painted in red and white bands as a daymark to make navigation into Fowey and the harbours of St Austell bay safer. It became a Grade II listed building in 1974 and is now managed by the National Trust. Alongside is a distant view of the coastguard lookout. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

Capturing the timeless beauty of Cornwall's rugged coastline, this vintage print transports us back to the year 1904. The enchanting Polridmouth Bay and majestic Gribbin Head take center stage, with their stunning natural formations and captivating allure. Nestled amidst this picturesque scene is the iconic Daymark Tower in Tywardreath, proudly standing as a beacon of safety for seafarers navigating into Fowey and St Austell bay. Originally erected by Trinity House in 1832, the square tower was never lit but served its purpose as a daymark. Painted in vibrant red and white bands, it stands tall against the backdrop of azure skies and rolling waves. Today, this architectural gem holds Grade II listed status since 1974 and is lovingly managed by the National Trust. As we delve deeper into this mesmerizing image, our eyes are drawn to a distant coastguard lookout stationed alongside these magnificent landmarks. It serves as a reminder of the vital role played by maritime authorities in safeguarding lives at sea.
