EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1900s in Padstow, Cornwall. The bustling scene captures the vibrant May Day celebrations that have become a beloved tradition in this charming town. In the heart of New Street stands St Petroc stables, where the iconic Obby Oss proudly parades outside its doors. Adorned with greenery and surrounded by an excited crowd, this magnificent horse-like figure is at the center of attention. Its fearsome appearance is enhanced by a large mask and swirling skirts that conceal its intentions. As the procession moves through the streets, a teaser follows closely behind, wielding a padded bat. This mischievous character adds an element of excitement as he playfully tries to catch young maids who cross his path. The atmosphere is filled with music and song as accordions are played, drums beat rhythmically, and voices harmonize together. Men, women, children - even sailors passing through - all join in on this joyous occasion. This historic photograph was captured by an unknown photographer who expertly framed not only the Obby Oss but also included elements such as buildings, lamp posts, and a diverse crowd that truly bring this moment to life. It serves as a reminder of how deeply rooted traditions can shape communities for generations to come.
