EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a unique piece of history - a fold-out counter card advertising Navy Mixture tobacco from 1922. The card is designed in the form of a picture frame or dressing mirror, with the general background printed to resemble wood grain, adding an authentic touch. In the oval frame on the back section of the card, we see a three-quarter length picture of a sailor looking over his shoulder, smoking a pipe. His hat band proudly reads "ENOWN" while in the background looms the silhouette of a warship, symbolizing strength and adventure. The center section showcases three pyramid-shaped tobacco packs, with one popping out through an oval cutout in the front section resembling a mirror's support or foot. On either side of this cutout are labels indicating "MILD" "MEDIUM" and "WHITE LABEL" varieties. Below these labels are panels displaying pricing information: "MILD STRENGTH 1/- PER OZ. ", "WHITE LABEL 10 1/2D PER OZ. ", and "MEDIUM STRENGTH 1/- PER OZ". These details give us insight into how tobacco was marketed during that era. On the reverse side of this fascinating artifact is another label identifying Mardons as window novelties makers specializing in embossed showcards, varnishing services, gelatiners & frame making based in Bristol & London. This print offers us not only glimpses into past advertising techniques but also serves as an intriguing memento from Nottingham City's rich history.
