Troops returning from the biggest ever Combined Operations daylight raid

Troops returning from the biggest ever Combined Operations daylight raid on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, northern France, during the Second World War.
Over 6, 050 infantry, made up predominately of Canadian troops, as well as British Special Service troops, a detachment of a US Rangers and a small contingent of Fighting French took part.
They were supported by a regiment of tanks and were put ashore from a naval force operating under protection of Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters.
Picture shows: Two troops holding the Union Jack flag which fluttered on the cliffs of Dieppe throughout the commando raid. It was planted there by one of the first parties to land and was left there as a beacon to guide the parties of raiders that followed and to guide all the troops to their ships on their return.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Troops returning from the biggest ever Combined Operations daylight raid on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, northern France, during the Second World War. Over 6,050 infantry, predominantly Canadian troops with support from British Special Service troops and a small contingent of Fighting French, embarked on this daring mission. Backed by tanks and under the protection of Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters, they set foot ashore from a naval force. This powerful print captures two troops proudly holding the Union Jack flag that fluttered atop the cliffs of Dieppe throughout the commando raid. Planted there by one of the first parties to land, it served as a beacon guiding subsequent waves of raiders and leading all troops back to their ships upon completion. Taken in August 1942 amidst intense combat and strategic maneuvers, this image encapsulates both bravery and unity displayed by these soldiers who risked their lives for freedom. The significance lies not only in its historical context but also in symbolizing resilience against adversity. Preserved by Memory Lane Prints from Daily Mirror's archives, this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of those who fought valiantly during Operation Jubilee. It stands as a testament to their unwavering determination and sacrifice during one of World War II's most pivotal moments.
