Fine Art Prints from Mary Evans Picture Library
Yanbu - Saudi Arabia
Yanbu al Bahr, also known simply as Yanbu, Yambo or Yenbo, is a major Red Sea port in the Al Madinah province of western Saudi Arabia. It lies on the eastern coast of the Red Sea in the Hejaz. Ornate (yet decrepit) buildings flank the streets, traversed by bands of pilgrims and camel caravans (as pictured here). Yanbu was a staging point on the spice and incense route from Yemen to Egypt and the Mediterranean region and served as a supply and operational base for Arab and British forces fighting the Ottoman Empire during the World War I. The buildings in Yanbu are made from coral limestone, palm tree trunks and adobe. Beautifully carved wooden balconies and window shades are reminders of Yanbus eventful past. Some of the neglected houses are still upright today, others have partially collapsed and lie in rumble"

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the sun-kissed streets of Yanbu al Bahr, a historic Red Sea port in western Saudi Arabia, come alive with the hustle and bustle of traders and pilgrims. Established as a staging point on the ancient spice and incense route from Yemen to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, Yanbu served as a vital supply and operational base for Arab and British forces during World War I. The ornate buildings in Yanbu, pictured here, are a testament to its rich history. Constructed primarily from coral limestone, palm tree trunks, and adobe, these structures boast beautifully carved wooden balconies and window shades that are remnants of Yanbu's eventful past. Some of the buildings remain upright, their intricate decorations still gleaming, while others have partially collapsed and lie in ruins. The scene depicted in this photograph is reminiscent of a bygone era. Camel caravans laden with goods traverse the dusty streets, adding to the sense of timelessness. The train tracks in the foreground hint at the modern world that has encroached upon this historic town, but the traditional architecture and the vibrant trading activity remain unchanged. Yanbu's strategic location on the Red Sea has made it an important cultural and commercial hub for centuries. The town's history is etched in every corner, from the intricately carved wooden balconies to the crumbling adobe walls. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, a reminder of the rich history and vibrant culture that continues to thrive in Yanbu al Bahr.
