This sepia print depicts Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who reigned from 1890 to 1948. Born on August 31, 1880, Wilhelmina became Queen at the tender age of eleven following the assassination of her father, King William III. Her reign, which spanned over five decades, is marked by her unwavering commitment to the Dutch people and her country's neutrality during World War I and II. Born into the House of Orange-Nassau, Wilhelmina was the granddaughter of King Willem III and Queen Emma of the Netherlands. Her upbringing was characterized by strict discipline and rigorous education, which prepared her for her future role as monarch. In 1901, she married Prince Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, with whom she had four children. During her reign, Wilhelmina worked to modernize the Dutch government and expand its influence on the international stage. She was a strong advocate for women's suffrage and played a significant role in the passage of the Women's Suffrage Act in 1919. In addition, she oversaw the construction of the famous Holland Tunnel, which connects the Netherlands to New York City.
