In this image from the world of 19th-century opera, we find ourselves in the opening scene of Carl Maria von Weber's enchanting masterpiece, "Der Freischütz" or "The Marksman." The year is 1821, and the setting is a rural village where the peasant Kilian (pictured left) has just bested the village forester Max (right) in a shooting contest. The contest, a crucial event in Act One, was a test of marksmanship skills, and Kilian's victory has left Max in a state of despair. The historical significance of this scene lies in the fact that "Der Freischütz" was one of the first German operas to gain widespread popularity both in Germany and beyond.
