EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in February 1916, a group of eight Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurses gather beside the Winter Garden at Quex Park. Among them is Antoinette Powell Cotton (1913-1996), dressed as a VAD nurse, holding the arm of her mother, Hannah Powell-Cotton (1881-1964). The Commandant of the Quex Park VAD Hospital, Hannah was the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton (1866-1940), founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. Nurse Fanny Watson stands directly behind Hannah Powell-Cotton, having completed an impressive 10,898 hours of work during the war. To her right is Nurse Mildred Swinford, who was also a Masseuse at the Hospital, having contributed 4,492 hours. Seated on the right of the group is a nurse wearing the Order of St John armband. One of the hospital patients watches from within the Winter Garden, a poignant reminder of the vital role these dedicated women played in caring for the wounded and sick during World War I. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. Run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, these nurses provided invaluable support to the military and civilian communities during the conflict. This photograph captures a moment of respite and camaraderie amidst the challenges of wartime nursing.
