EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts a moment of joy and camaraderie during the Birchington Sports Day held in 1918. The scene takes place at the Woodford House School field, where patients from the Quex Park VAD Hospital and its Annexe at St Michaels, located in Birchington, eagerly watch as hospital staff participate in the Three-legged Race, event number 7 on the programme. The event was organized to raise funds for the Birchington War Depot, an initiative that provided essential articles to the local hospitals. The Quex Park VAD Hospital, run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, had opened its doors on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The Commandant of the hospital was Hannah Powell-Cotton, the wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum and VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area. Major Powell-Cotton played a crucial role in organizing the transportation of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. The patients, dressed in their best, exhibit a sense of excitement as they cheer on the staff, showcasing the spirit of unity and support that transcended the hospital walls. The Three-legged Race, with its lighthearted and playful nature, served as a welcome distraction from the daily rigors of hospital life. The successful event raised the impressive sum of 8.14s., a testament to the community's dedication to supporting the war effort and the local hospitals. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of those who lived through the challenging times of World War I, as well as the importance of coming together as a community to support one another during times of need.
