Born as Osman Ghazi, he was affectionately known as "Kara Osman" or "Kara" meaning "black" due to his dark complexion. Osman I was the leader of the Ottoman Turks, a Turkic people who had migrated from Central Asia and established a principality in northwestern Anatolia, present-day Turkey. Osman I's reign marked the beginning of the Ottoman State and the Ottoman Dynasty, which would go on to rule for over six centuries. He is considered a national hero in Turkey and is often referred to as Osman Gazi, or Osman the Conqueror.
