EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the enchanting Slow-paced Lemur, or Red Slender Loris (Loris tardigradus), a nocturnal primate native to the tropical forests of Sri Lanka and southern India. The Slow-paced Lemur is known for its slow and deliberate movements, which earned it its name. This small primate, measuring only around 14 inches in length, is characterized by its long, slender limbs, bushy tail, and distinctive red fur. The Slow-paced Lemur is a solitary creature, spending most of its time high up in the trees, where it feeds on a varied diet of insects, fruits, and nectar. Its large, round eyes enable it to see well in the dark, making it an expert hunter in the moonlit forest. This illustration is taken from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany, published in 1792. Shaw and Nodder were renowned naturalists of their time, and their work was instrumental in documenting the natural history of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). The intricate details of the Slow-paced Lemur's anatomy and fur texture are beautifully captured in this engraving, making it a valuable historical record of this fascinating creature.
