This photograph print, sourced from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back in time to the icy expanse of the Arctic Circle in 1836. The intrepid figure at the center of the image is Thomas Simpson, a Scottish explorer and surveyor, embarking on a perilous land journey in the heart of a blizzard. Thomas Simpson (1774-1831) was a renowned British Arctic explorer, best known for his expeditions to Spitsbergen and Novaya Zemlya. In 1836, at the age of 62, Simpson set out on a mission to explore the uncharted coastline of the Arctic Ocean. Accompanied by a small team, he braved the harsh Arctic conditions, enduring sub-zero temperatures, treacherous ice floes, and violent storms. This photograph captures Simpson in the midst of one such storm, trudging through the snow with his sled and dog team. The white landscape, punctuated by the dark silhouettes of the dogs and the explorer, creates a stark and hauntingly beautiful scene.
