EDITORS COMMENTS
Saladin, the illustrious Muslim Sultan of Egypt and Syria, is depicted in this evocative 12th-century print from Mary Evans Picture Library. Born in Tikrit, Iraq, in 1138, Saladin, whose full name was Salah Ad-Din Yusuf Ibn Ayyub, rose to power through military prowess and strategic alliances. He is admired for his unifying leadership during a time of political instability and external invasion in the Middle East. Saladin's reign, which lasted from 1174 to 1193, was marked by military successes against the Crusaders, who had seized much of the region during the previous century. In this image, Saladin is shown wearing a long, flowing robe and a distinctive middle Eastern hat, adorned with a tall, pointed crown. His beard, neatly trimmed, frames his strong jawline and expressive features. Saladin's piercing gaze and regal bearing convey his authority and determination. The print, which dates from the 12th century, offers a rare glimpse into the visual culture of the Middle East during this period. Saladin's image was likely disseminated through various means, including manuscript illustrations and portable icons, to inspire loyalty and awe among his subjects and allies. The print also serves as a testament to Saladin's enduring legacy as a revered leader and a symbol of Muslim unity and resilience in the face of external threats. Saladin's reign marked the beginning of the Ayyubid dynasty, which ruled Egypt and Syria until the 13th century. His military campaigns expanded the borders of the Muslim world and secured its position against European encroachment. Saladin's rule also saw the construction of many iconic landmarks, including the Al-Nasir Mosque in Damascus and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Today, Saladin remains a revered figure in Middle Eastern history and a symbol of Muslim unity and resilience.
