The enigmatic representation challenges the commonly held belief of Saint Pantaleon as a healer and not a religious figure. Saint Pantaleon, also known as Panteleimon, was born around 305 AD in Nicomedia, Bithynia (present-day Turkey). He gained a reputation for his exceptional medical skills and dedicated himself to healing the sick and the poor, often using his personal wealth to fund his charitable works. His altruistic nature and commitment to the welfare of others earned him the admiration of the people and the ire of the Roman authorities. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Maximian, Saint Pantaleon was arrested and sentenced to death. According to legend, he was miraculously healed from a fatal wound by an angel while in prison, and the governor was converted to Christianity upon witnessing the miracle. Saint Pantaleon was later released and continued his healing ministry until his death.
