The image shows a regiment of soldiers, standing at attention outside the Tauride Palace in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg), with the red flag raised high. The Tauride Palace was the meeting place of the Russian State Duma, the legislative body of the Russian Empire, and the site of the February Revolution. In the days leading up to April 21, 1917, the Russian people had grown weary of the harsh conditions and political instability under the Tsarist regime. Protests and demonstrations had spread across the country, and on February 23, 1917 (March 8, 1917, according to the Gregorian calendar), the Tsar abdicated. The Provisional Government took power, and the Duma assumed the role of the legislative branch. The soldiers in this photograph, members of the 21st Infantry Regiment, were among the first to pledge their support to the new government. They arrived outside the Tauride Palace on April 21, 1917, to protect the building and ensure the safety of the members of the Duma. The red flag, a symbol of the revolution, was raised as a sign of their allegiance. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, is an important visual record of the Russian Revolution and the role of the military in shaping its outcome.
