This evocative photograph captures the historic moment in Russia's history when the second Five-Year Plan was proclaimed in January 1932. The image, taken during a mass rally in Moscow's Red Square, shows a sea of people gathered to hear the announcement from Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. Dressed in heavy coats and hats, they listen intently to the speech being delivered from the grandstand, their faces expressing a range of emotions from hope and determination to skepticism and doubt. The Five-Year Plans were a series of ambitious economic initiatives introduced by the Soviet Union to rapidly industrialize and modernize the country following the Russian Revolution. The first Five-Year Plan, launched in 1928, had focused on heavy industry and collectivization of agriculture, resulting in significant economic growth but also widespread hardship and famine. The second Five-Year Plan, which was announced in this photograph, aimed to build on the successes and lessons learned from the first plan. It placed greater emphasis on consumer goods and infrastructure projects, and set ambitious targets for increasing industrial production and agricultural output.
