EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh, dressed in a stylish hat and coat, stands with her husband, Prince Alfonso, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, at Edinburgh Airport in July 1966. The couple, who were on the cusp of embarking on their honeymoon, exude a sense of joy and excitement as they prepare to board their plane for their new life in Spain. Princess Beatrice, the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, married Prince Alfonso, the former King of Greece, in a lavish ceremony at St. Margaret's Church in Westminster Abbey on July 19, 1966. The wedding was a grand affair, attended by members of the British and Greek royal families, as well as dignitaries and high society figures from around the world. The couple's departure from Edinburgh marked the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. They had met in 1959, when Beatrice was just 18 years old, and had been engaged since 1962. However, their plans to marry had been delayed due to political instability in Greece, which had forced Alfonso into exile. It wasn't until 1966, when the situation in Greece had stabilized, that they were finally able to marry and begin their life together. As they set off for their honeymoon in Spain, Beatrice and Alfonso were filled with hope and optimism for their future. The photograph captures a moment of pure happiness and excitement, as they embark on a new journey together as husband and wife. The photograph is a rare and precious glimpse into the personal lives of two royal figures, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of love and the joy that comes with starting a new life together.
