EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a historic moment in the relationship between the Maori people of New Zealand and the British monarchy, as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary) are warmly received during their visit to New Zealand in June 1901. The Duke is shown here wearing the huia feather, a sacred emblem of the Maori, as a mark of esteem bestowed upon him during the tour. The huia bird, whose distinctive blue-black plumage adorns the feather, was a symbol of the Maori chiefly class and was considered a sacred bird. Tragically, the huia was declared extinct in the early 20th century, making this feather a priceless relic of a bygone era. The visit of the Duke and Duchess marked the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the Maori people and the British monarchy, as the British Empire continued to expand its influence in the South Pacific. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural exchange that took place during this time and offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of New Zealand and its indigenous people.
