In June 1791, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, along with their family, attempted to flee France and seek asylum in Austria. They managed to make it as far as the small town of Varennes-en-Argonne, but their disguises were soon discovered, and they were forced to return to Paris. The image shows the royal family, including their children, being escorted back to the capital by French soldiers. The queen is seen in a simple dress and bonnet, while the king wears a commoner's hat and a plain coat. Their attempt to escape was a desperate bid to avoid the growing unrest and violence in Paris, but it ultimately failed, leading to increased public anger and the eventual downfall of the monarchy.
