EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph taken on 19 April 1956 at the Royal Aeronautical Society, Lt-Col Charles E. Yeager (centre) is seen in the company of two renowned British test pilots, Sqn Ldr Neville Duke of Hawker Aircraft (right) and Peter Twiss of Fairey Aviation (left). At the time, Yeager held the distinction of being the first pilot to break the sound barrier in level flight aboard the Bell X-1, an achievement he had accomplished on 14 October 1947. The gathering of these three pioneering aviators underscores the spirit of camaraderie and collaboration that existed among the world's leading test pilots during the post-World War II era. With their shared passion for pushing the boundaries of aviation technology, they were at the forefront of advancing the field of aviation and expanding the limits of human flight. Sqn Ldr Neville Duke, a decorated RAF pilot and test pilot for Hawker Aircraft, was known for his extensive experience in testing high-performance aircraft. Peter Twiss, a test pilot for Fairey Aviation, was also an accomplished aviator who had set numerous speed records and held various aviation awards. The photograph captures a moment in time when these three extraordinary individuals came together to celebrate their collective achievements and look towards the future of aviation. The image serves as a testament to their unwavering dedication, courage, and pioneering spirit, which continues to inspire generations of aviators and engineers. As they stand in front of a backdrop of aviation memorabilia, the photograph encapsulates the essence of a bygone era, when the skies were the limit, and the thrill of flight knew no bounds.
