Above, the intricately detailed drawing depicts the "Globe Volant" or Flying Globe, which saw its historic maiden voyage over Paris on October 19, 1783. The intrepid aviators, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and Marquis d'Arlandes, soared through the skies aboard this hot air balloon, becoming the first humans to leave the earth's surface voluntarily. Beneath the flying globe, another drawing captures the design of an Air Balloon, which was planned for a daring trans-Channel crossing from Calais to Dover by none other than Mr. Charles.
