This historic photograph depicts a letter sent by the renowned German military commander, Erwin Rommel, to the Free French forces under the command of General Georges Catroux during the Battle of Bir Hakeim in North Africa on June 3, 1943. The letter, now a symbol of French resistance during World War II, invited the Free French forces to surrender in the face of the advancing Axis forces.
