EDITORS COMMENTS
The Mausoleum of Augustus: A Testament to Ancient Roman Architecture and Imperial Power This evocative image showcases the majestic Mausoleum of Augustus, a funerary monument built by Rome's first emperor, Gaius Octavius Thurinus, better known as Augustus, in 28 BC. Situated on the Campus Martius in Rome, Italy, Europe, this architectural marvel was the first imperial tomb in the city. Augustus, the grandnephew of Julius Caesar, rose to power following Caesar's assassination in 44 BC. He ruled the Roman Republic from 27 BC until his death in AD 14, marking the transition from the republican era to the imperial one. The Mausoleum of Augustus is a testament to his military, political, and architectural achievements. The circular, brick structure, which stands approximately 108 feet in height and 348 feet in diameter, was designed to house the remains of Augustus and his family. Its circular design, a departure from the traditional rectangular Roman tombs, was inspired by the Etruscan and Hellenistic architectural styles prevalent in the Mediterranean world. The Mausoleum's construction, which began in 28 BC, was a significant undertaking. Bricks were used extensively in its construction, reflecting the Roman innovation in brick-making technology. The monument's grandeur was further enhanced by a portico, a colonnade, and a moat filled with water, creating an imposing and awe-inspiring sight. Today, the Mausoleum of Augustus stands as a symbol of ancient Rome's architectural prowess and imperial power. Its ruins, a reminder of the Roman Empire's rich history, continue to captivate visitors from around the world, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and splendor of the ancient world.
