4 September 1797: The Suppression of the Reactionary Deputies at the Tuileries, Paris This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in French history as reactionary deputies, having gathered at the Tuileries Palace in Paris, are forcibly dispersed by Napoleon Bonaparte and his troops. The date was 4 September 1797, and the events that unfolded would mark a turning point in the French Revolution. The reactionary deputies, also known as the "Chouans" or "Federalists," had convened at the Tuileries Palace to discuss their opposition to the centralizing policies of the French government under Napoleon. Their grievances centered around the loss of local power and autonomy, as well as their opposition to the military conquest of Italy, which was seen as an unnecessary and costly endeavor.
