EDITORS COMMENTS
On a fateful day in January 1842, Marie-Alphonse Ratisbonne, a 29-year-old Jewish art dealer from Bordeaux, France, experienced an extraordinary event that would forever change the course of his life. As he gazed upon an image of the Virgin Mary in the Church of Sant' Maria della Strada in Rome, he was suddenly struck by an overwhelming sense of divine presence. The vision was so intense that it left him physically and emotionally transformed. Ratisbonne later recounted that during the vision, the Virgin Mary spoke to him in Hebrew, his native language, and revealed to him the truth of Christianity. Moved by this profound experience, Ratisbonne immediately renounced his Jewish faith and was baptized as a Christian. The news of Ratisbonne's conversion spread quickly throughout Europe, generating widespread interest and controversy. Some hailed it as a miraculous event, while others dismissed it as a hoax or a mental illness. Regardless of the skepticism, Ratisbonne's conversion had a profound impact on the Jewish and Christian communities, and his story became a source of inspiration for many. This photograph captures the essence of Ratisbonne's vision, transporting us back in time to the moment when a humble Jewish art dealer encountered the divine in the most unexpected of places. The image of the Virgin Mary, with her gentle expression and outstretched arms, seems to beckon us to contemplate the mysteries of faith and the transformative power of spiritual experiences.
