EDITORS COMMENTS
This Carte-de-Visite (CDV) photograph, taken in June 1866, features the enigmatic figure of Orrin Porter Rockwell (1813-1878), an American frontiersman, Utah pioneer, and a man whose legend continues to be shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Born in New York State in 1813, Rockwell joined the Mormon Church in 1832 and became a trusted bodyguard for Joseph Smith, the church's founder. He later moved to Utah Territory with the Mormon pioneers in 1847 and gained a reputation as a formidable figure and a man of great strength and courage. Rockwell's most notorious exploits, however, are connected to his role as a Mormon "Destroying Angel," a term used to describe a group of enforcers who dealt with those who threatened the Mormon community. He was said to have a remarkable ability to shoot a rifle or pistol with deadly accuracy, and was rumored to have killed over 100 men in defense of the Mormon faith. Despite the controversy surrounding his actions, Rockwell was well-respected within the Mormon community and was even granted a pardon by Brigham Young, the leader of the Mormon Church, in 1851. He continued to serve as a bodyguard, scout, and lawman in Utah Territory until his death in 1878. This photograph, taken during Rockwell's later years, captures him with a serious expression and a well-groomed appearance. His hair, which is parted down the middle and slicked back, is a stark contrast to the wild, untamed look often associated with frontiersmen of the time. The image serves as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted nature of the American West and the men who helped shape its history.
