EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph, taken in the late 1980s, a man is seen test-firing a miniature cannon inside the cozy quarters of the Quarter House pub, located on Compton Road in Wolverhampton. The man, who is the owner of a company specializing in the production of miniature cannons, chose the pub as an alternative location for testing his latest creation due to complaints from neighbors near his factory about the loud noise generated during the test firing. The regular patrons of the Quarter House, however, welcomed the unusual event with open arms, seemingly unfazed by the deafening bang and subsequent plume of smoke that filled the room. The cannon, which was used primarily as a starting gun for yacht races and other maritime events, emitted a choking cloud of smoke that left those present momentarily choke-filled. Despite the initial shock, the patrons of the Quarter House pub seemed to find the experience exhilarating, with many gathering around to witness the spectacle firsthand. The man, dressed in a leather apron and holding a long match, carefully aimed the cannon before giving it a hearty tug, igniting the fuse and sending a ball of flame shooting out of the barrel. The resulting explosion sent a shockwave through the room, leaving everyone present with a sense of awe and excitement. This photograph, first published in The Independent in 1989, captures a unique moment in time, showcasing the unexpected fusion of tradition and innovation, as well as the camaraderie and sense of adventure that could be found in the unlikeliest of places.
