This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the history of Italy and Switzerland during the French Revolutionary Wars. Titled "Passage of the Linth: The French Cross the Linth River, in Switzerland, Where They Have No Right to Be," the photograph depicts a group of French soldiers wading through the icy waters of the Linth River in Switzerland in the year 1799. The Linth River marked the border between the Swiss cantons and the French Republic, and the French army, under the command of General Brune, had invaded Swiss territory with the intention of expanding their revolutionary influence.
