Othon I, also known as Otto of Bavaria, was the first king of modern Greece, reigning from 1832 to 1862. In October 1862, after a tumultuous reign marked by political instability and financial difficulties, Othon was forced to abdicate and leave Greece. In this historic photograph, Othon is seen arriving in Venice, Italy, in exile. The image captures the somber mood of the moment as Othon, dressed in a heavy overcoat and hat, steps off the boat onto Italian soil. His expression is one of resignation and sadness, as he bids farewell to the kingdom he had tried to govern for over three decades. The crowd on the dock, a mix of onlookers and well-wishers, watches the scene unfold with a mixture of curiosity and sympathy.
