EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisitely preserved Ophioderma egertoni, a brittlestar that hails from the Middle Lias of the Jurassic period, approximately 195-189 million years old. Discovered in Bridport, Dorset, England, this ancient invertebrate is a testament to the rich marine life that once thrived in the Mesozoic Era. Brittlestars, also known as ophiuroids, are echinoderms, a phylum that includes sea stars, sea urchins, and sand dollars. Ophioderma egertoni, named after the naturalist Edward Sellers Egerton, is a member of the Ophiodermatidae family and the superorder Ophiuroidea. The brittlestar's body is elongated and flat, with a central disc and five arms, each adorned with numerous small, brittle, finger-like appendages. These arms are covered in tiny, tube feet, which allowed the animal to cling to the seafloor and move about with ease. The Middle Lias Formation, where this specimen was found, is a significant geological site, as it offers a glimpse into the Early Jurassic period, a time when Europe was experiencing a warming climate and the first signs of angiosperm plants began to appear. This beautifully detailed print, with its intricate depiction of Ophioderma egertoni, offers a fascinating glimpse into the prehistoric world and the diverse array of marine life that inhabited our planet millions of years ago.
