Discovered in Bridport, Dorset, England, this ancient invertebrate is a testament to the rich marine life that once thrived in the Mesozoic Era. Brittlestars, also known as ophiuroids, are echinoderms, a phylum that includes sea stars, sea urchins, and sand dollars. Ophioderma egertoni, named after the naturalist Edward Sellers Egerton, is a member of the Ophiodermatidae family and the superorder Ophiuroidea. The brittlestar's body is elongated and flat, with a central disc and five arms, each adorned with numerous small, brittle, finger-like appendages. These arms are covered in tiny, tube feet, which allowed the animal to cling to the seafloor and move about with ease.
