New Year's Eve in an Unnamed Workhouse: A Festive Gathering (1897) This evocative illustration by J. Barnard Davis captures the scene of New Year's Eve celebrations in an unnamed workhouse during the late 19th century. The workhouse, a last resort for the destitute and the elderly, was a place of harsh conditions and spartan living.
