December 31, 1848: A Plumper Sea Serpent Sighting off the Coast of Portugal This intriguing sketch, obtained from a witness aboard HMS Plumper, depicts an extraordinary marine creature sighted near Oporto, Portugal. The date was December 31, 1848. The witness, an experienced sailor, described the creature as a plumper sea serpent, with a bulky body and a mane-like appendage encircling its neck. The HMS Plumper, a British naval vessel, was on a routine patrol in the Atlantic Ocean when the sighting occurred. The crew, taken aback by the unusual sight, quickly documented the encounter through sketches and descriptions. The witness reported that the serpent-like creature was approximately 30 feet long, with a large head adorned with small, beady eyes and a wide, toothy grin. Its body was covered in smooth, dark scales, and it moved gracefully through the water, leaving a trail of bubbles in its wake.
