EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1920s, the Duchess of York, later known as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900-2002), is seen receiving a heartwarming gift from a group of small children from Dr. Barnardo's Home during a ceremony granting borough status to Ilford on October 21, 1926. The Duchess, dressed elegantly in a formal outfit and adorned with a mayoral chain, exudes grace and poise as she cradles the large teddy bear presented to her by the children. The Duchess, who was the wife of the Duke of York (later King George VI) and the mother of the future Queen Elizabeth II, was a dedicated patron of various charities and organizations, including Dr. Barnardo's, which provided care and support for vulnerable children. The presentation of the charter granting borough status to Ilford was an occasion for celebration, and the children of Dr. Barnardo's Home were invited to participate in the festivities. As the Duchess accepts the teddy bear with a warm smile, the children look on with excitement and anticipation. The image captures the joy and innocence of childhood and the kindness and compassion of the Duchess, who went on to become a beloved and respected figure in British history. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the importance of charitable work and the impact it can have on the lives of children and communities.
