EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, published in Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases two intriguing primate species: the silvery marmoset (Mico argentatus) and the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus). The silvery marmoset, with its silver-gray fur and bushy tail, is depicted on the left side of the image. Native to Central and South America, this species is known for its agility and social behavior, living in large family groups that work together to build their nests and forage for food. On the right side of the image, the common marmoset, also known as the white-bellied marmoset or the rufous marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), is shown. This species, with its reddish-brown fur and white underbelly, is native to the same region as the silvery marmoset. They are highly social animals, living in groups of up to 20 individuals, and are known for their distinctive vocalizations and use of tools to extract food from tree bark. Brodtmann's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate textures and patterns of the marmosets' fur and the lush foliage in the background. This illustration is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century and provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of these two fascinating primate species.
