EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Kahau, or Proboscis Monkey, Nasalis larvatus, an endangered primate species native to the islands of Borneo and Indonesia. The monkey's distinctive long nose, which can grow up to 15 centimeters long, gives it its name. The Proboscis Monkey is also characterized by its large ears, white beard, and bright red eyes. The Proboscis Monkey is currently listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with populations declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting, and climate change. Their preferred habitat, mangrove forests, is being destroyed at an alarming rate due to deforestation and coastal development. This beautiful engraving, created by W.H. Lizars after an illustration by James Stewart, was published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Monkeys, in Edinburgh in 1844. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the print serve to highlight the unique features of this fascinating primate species, while also raising awareness of the threats it faces in the wild. The Proboscis Monkey is an important part of the biodiversity of its native habitats, and efforts are being made to protect and conserve its populations. Conservation initiatives include habitat restoration, community-based conservation programs, and anti-poaching measures. By supporting these efforts and raising awareness of the Proboscis Monkey's plight, we can help ensure that this remarkable species continues to thrive for generations to come.
