EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate print showcases the Porbeagle Shark, Lamna nasus, a vulnerable elasmobranch species found in the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans. The Porbeagle, also known as the Salmon Shark or the Blue Shark of the North Atlantic, is a powerful and agile predator, growing up to 2.5 meters in length. This illustration, drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his Natural History of British Fishes, published by Donovan and Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808, captures the Porbeagle's distinctive features, including its elongated, torpedo-shaped body, large pectoral and dorsal fins, and its prominent, triangular dorsal fin. The Porbeagle is an important apex predator in its ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine food chains. However, this species is currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), primarily due to overfishing and bycatch in commercial fisheries. The Porbeagle is hunted for its meat, which is considered a delicacy, and its liver oil, which is used in the production of vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids. This beautiful illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the Porbeagle Shark population and protecting the marine ecosystems they inhabit. It is a testament to the natural history of British fishes and the scientific curiosity that drove early naturalists like Edward Donovan to document and study the natural world around them. The intricate details of the engraving and the vibrant colors of the handcolouring bring the Porbeagle Shark to life, making it a fascinating and captivating subject for anyone interested in ichthyology, zoology, or the marine world.
