EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Platynematichthys notatus, also known as the Stripe-tailed Pimelodus or the Common Pimelodid Catfish. The image is taken from Robert Schomburgk's "Fishes of Guiana," which was published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ichthyology in Edinburgh in 1841. The illustration was produced by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars. The Platynematichthys notatus is a large, tropical catfish native to the waters of South America. It is characterized by its elongated, slender body, which can grow up to 1.5 meters in length. The fish is named for its distinctive striped tail, which is visible in this detailed illustration. The Platynematichthys notatus is an important species in its ecosystem and plays a significant role in the food chain as both a predator and prey. The production of this engraving was a labor-intensive process. First, James Stewart created a detailed illustration of the fish, which was then used as a guide for W.H. Lizars as he created the engraving. The final product was then hand-colored, adding vibrant hues to the fish's scales and other features. The result is a stunning and accurate representation of the Platynematichthys notatus, which was an essential contribution to the scientific record of the fish species of South America during the 19th century.
