EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, created by Pedretti for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases an intriguing assembly of various insect species. The central figure is the European mantis or praying mantis (Mantis religiosa), identified by its distinctive elongated arms and camouflaged body. To its left, a leaf mantis or Chinese mantis (Choeradodis rhomboidea) is depicted, easily recognizable by its green, leaf-like hind legs. Adorning the right side of the print, we find a tiger beetle (Manticora latipennis), characterized by its vibrant colors and powerful mandibles. The mantidfly (Mantispa styriaca), also known as a mante or manicore, is illustrated towards the bottom of the image. With its slender body and transparent wings, this insect shares a superficial resemblance to a mantis, but it is actually more closely related to flies and lacewings. The intricate details in this engraving bring each of these fascinating creatures to life, revealing their unique features and intriguing appearances. The artistry of Pedretti's work not only highlights the natural beauty of these insects but also serves as a testament to the skill and dedication of the natural history illustrators of the 19th century.
