EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving depicts a Caprimulgus species goatsucker, or nightjar, native to Peru. The intricately detailed illustration was created by Charles Hamilton Smith based on a specimen in the collection of Reverend Henry Hennah. The image is taken from Edward Griffith's "The Animal Kingdom" published by the Baron Cuvier in London in 1828. Goatsuckers, also known as nightjars, are a group of nocturnal birds characterized by their long, pointed wings, large eyes, and short, powerful legs. They are named for their distinctive call, which sounds like the bleating of a goat. This bird species is native to the Americas and is well adapted to hunting in the dark. They have large, open mouths that allow them to fly silently and catch insects in mid-air. The engraving captures the bird's striking appearance with remarkable accuracy. Its plumage is depicted in intricate detail, with the fine lines and shading used to create a sense of texture and depth. The bird's large, round eyes are also highlighted, giving it an intense, almost otherworldly gaze. This illustration is an important contribution to the natural history record of South American birds. At the time, European naturalists were eager to document the diverse wildlife of the New World, and publications like "The Animal Kingdom" helped to advance scientific knowledge and understanding of the natural world. Today, this beautiful and intricately detailed engraving remains an enduring testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the past.
