EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing image, French explorer Francois Peron carefully examines an Aboriginal tomb on Maria Island, Tasmania. The tomb, a conical structure made of wooden fibre and long poles, is shown in various stages of completion: complete on the left, half-opened in the center, and dismantled on the right. This unique grave design, reminiscent of a pyramid, was a testament to the rich cultural traditions of the indigenous people of Tasmania. The scene is depicted in this handcoloured copperplate engraving by Sasso, based on an original drawing by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur. Lesueur, a naturalist and artist, was part of the Peron expedition to Australia from 1800 to 1804. His detailed observations and illustrations of the natural world and indigenous peoples were later published in Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," a comprehensive work showcasing the diverse cultures and customs of various civilizations. The image offers a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the funerary practices of the Aboriginal people of Tasmania. It also highlights the important role that explorers and naturalists played in documenting and preserving the world's cultural and historical heritage. This image is a testament to the enduring fascination with the mysteries of other cultures and the importance of recording and understanding them for future generations.
