EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing and dramatic handcoloured copperplate engraving, we witness a chaotic scene unfolding in the Ward Room of HMS Victory, the renowned flagship of the British Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. At the heart of the commotion stands Lieutenant Newcome, clad in a nightgown, wielding a chair as a makeshift weapon, as he attacks an officer identified as Captain Clackit. Clackit, equally disheveled, retaliates with a sword, which he had previously used to inflict a wound on Newcome. The Ward Room, adorned with naval paraphernalia such as pistols, anchors, flags, swords, spyglasses, and a barrel of grog, serves as the backdrop to this unexpected confrontation. The officers, also in nightgowns, emerge from their cabins, seemingly drawn by the disturbance. This scene, taken from an illustration by Charles Williams in John Mitford's "Adventures of Johnny Newcome in the Navy," published in London in 1819, is believed to depict an incident that took place in Palermo, Sicily, during a docking of HMS Victory. The cause of the fight between Newcome and Clackit is unclear, but it may have been related to a misunderstanding or personal grievance. The presence of Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was aboard HMS Victory during this period, is not explicitly mentioned in the image. However, the inclusion of a French flag and the age and distinguished appearance of some of the officers suggest that the incident may have occurred during a battle or engagement with the French fleet. This image offers a glimpse into the tumultuous world of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, a time of adventure, danger, and colonialism, as well as the complex dynamics of life aboard a naval vessel.
