EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming color plate, taken from Frances H. Low's esteemed book "Queen Victoria's Dolls," showcases an exquisite scene featuring two wooden dolls representing the renowned ballet dancer Pauline Leroux and the child actress Miss Elizabeth Poole. The image is based on an illustration by Alan Wright and dates back to 1894. Pauline Leroux's doll is depicted in the midst of a performance as Masaniello, a ballet piece known for its passionate and dramatic nature. The dancer's grace and elegance are beautifully captured in the intricately crafted doll, with every detail, from her flowing satin skirt to her delicate ballet slippers, meticulously rendered. The tiny doll representing Miss Elizabeth Poole is seen dressed in an elegant outfit, reminiscent of the costumes worn during the operetta "Old and Young." The young princess Victoria is believed to have dressed these dolls herself, adding an extra layer of authenticity to this scene. The sisters Mlle. Melanie, Ancilin, and Euphrosine, who were also famous dolls from the same collection, are not present in this image. However, their absence does not detract from the enchanting tableau that unfolds before us. The dolls' wooden bodies, clad in their richly decorated costumes, evoke the opulence and grandeur of the Victorian era. This delightful image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when toys were cherished objects of beauty and craftsmanship, and the worlds of ballet and theatre held the hearts of many in thrall.
