This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 680, featuring the Hymenopteran insects Crabro subpunctatus and Crossocerus quadrimaculatus, alongside the plant Carum verticillatum, commonly known as Whorled Caraway. Dated between 1824 and 1839, this exquisite plate was produced during the 19th century by renowned British naturalist John Curtis and his team of skilled engravers and botanical illustrators. The Hymenoptera order is the largest group of insects, characterized by their winged or wingless bodies and the distinctive morphology of their wings, which are membranous and covered in tiny scales. Crabro subpunctatus, also known as the Wasp Crab or the Large Crab Spider Wasp, is a solitary wasp species. The wasp is depicted in the foreground of the plate, its slender body and long, slender legs poised for motion. Crossocerus quadrimaculatus, also known as the Four-spotted Drone Wasp or the Four-spotted Cross-wasp, is a parasitic wasp species. The wasp is shown in the background of the plate, its striking black and yellow coloration contrasting against the green foliage of the Whorled Caraway plant. The Whorled Caraway plant, a member of the Apiaceae family, is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. Its delicate white flowers are arranged in whorls, hence the common name, and its distinctive aroma is reminiscent of caraway seeds.
