EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Blacksmith Tree Frog, Hypsiboas faber, also known as the Smith Frog or Blacksmith Treefrog. The intricately detailed illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy. The engraving, illustrated by Jean Gabriel Pretre and directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, showcases the Blacksmith Tree Frog perched on a flat, moss-covered surface, its distinctive coloration of olive-green and black, with yellowish-green spots, clearly visible. The frog's large, round eyes are wide open, and its long, slender hind legs are spread out, ready for a leap. The background of the illustration features various marine elements, including a Clypeaster rosaceus or flat sea urchin, and a Rosaceo or clipeastro, a type of red alga. These additions may reflect the Blacksmith Tree Frog's habitat near coastal areas. Turpin, a French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is known for his exceptional talent and meticulous attention to detail. His direction and collaboration with Pretre resulted in this stunning representation of the Blacksmith Tree Frog, which remains a testament to their artistic and scientific achievements.
