EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment during the Spanish Campaign of the Hundred Years War, as the Black Prince, Edward of Woodstock (1330-1376), presents his personal standard or banner to Sir John Chandos (circa 1320-1376). The Black Prince, the eldest son of King Edward III, led the English forces in the campaign against the Kingdom of Castile and León, allied with France, in 1366 and 1367. The Black Prince, dressed in a richly embroidered tunic and a jean surcoat adorned with the arms of England and Aquitaine, kneels before Sir John Chandos, who holds the banner aloft. The banner, featuring the arms of the Prince and the red cross of the Order of the Garter, is an emblem of his authority and leadership. The scene is set against the backdrop of a medieval battlefield, with soldiers and their shields in the foreground, and a drummer in the distance signaling the march of the English army. The Black Prince's campaign in Spain marked a significant turning point in the Hundred Years War, as it resulted in the capture of the city of Jerez de la Frontera and the defeat of the Castilian forces. The campaign also cemented the Black Prince's reputation as a brilliant military commander and a formidable opponent. This image, captured from the chronicles of Jean Froissart (circa 1337-1405), a renowned French chronicler, offers a glimpse into the medieval world of warfare and chivalry, and the intricate tapestry of alliances and conflicts that shaped the 14th century European history.
