EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of the 1870s, a groundbreaking collaboration between three visionary men - Alfred Mager (left), Francis Horner (centre), and Thomas Bowman Stephenson (right) - marked the inception of the National Children's Home. This pioneering trio came together in 1869, united by their shared commitment to providing care and support for vulnerable children in need. Alfred Mager, a respected philanthropist and businessman, brought his financial resources and organizational skills to the table. Francis Horner, a prominent social reformer, contributed his extensive knowledge of child welfare and his passion for improving the lives of children. Thomas Bowman Stephenson, a dedicated clergyman, provided spiritual guidance and a deep sense of compassion. The National Children's Home, which was established as a result of their collaboration, was the first organization in the United Kingdom to provide long-term residential care for children who had been orphaned, abandoned, or otherwise unable to live with their families. The home offered a safe and nurturing environment, where children could receive education, medical care, and emotional support. This photograph captures a moment in time when these three influential figures came together to make a difference in the lives of countless children. Their collaboration paved the way for the development of the modern childcare system and set an example for future generations of those working in the field of child welfare. The National Children's Home, which continues to operate today as The Children's Society, remains a testament to their vision and dedication.
