EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant memorial commemorates the 13th/18th Hussars, a British armored regiment that played a crucial role in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. The regiment was uniquely equipped with Flail tanks, which were essentially giant carpet sweepers outfitted with massive rotating steel chains at the front, acting as brushes. Their primary mission was to clear the Normandy beaches of hidden mines, providing essential support for infantry units such as the East Yorkshire Regiment. The 13th/18th Hussars' Flail tanks were shared among various infantry units, making it necessary for multiple memorials to honor their sacrifices throughout Normandy. This particular memorial stands at La Breche d'Hermanville, a testament to the bravery and dedication of these soldiers. The D-Day invasion marked the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. The 13th/18th Hussars' contributions were instrumental in securing the beaches and paving the way for the Allied forces' advance. Their innovative use of Flail tanks proved to be a game-changer, allowing the infantry to move more freely and safely along the mine-laden shores. This photograph, taken in 2009, captures the essence of the memorial, which stands as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by the 13th/18th Hussars during the D-Day landings. The memorial's tranquil setting, with the sun casting long shadows on the ground, adds a sense of reverence and reflection, making it a poignant tribute to the brave soldiers who gave their lives for the cause of freedom.
