The Netherlands - Veere - Scottish House

An elderly couple in the garden of a Scottish House in Veere, a city in the southwestern Netherlands, on Walcheren island in the province of Zeeland. Veere was the principal port used by Scottish wool traders in dealings with the Dutch between 1541 and 1799. At the beginning of the 16th century, trade with Scotland became important to the Island of Walcheren. In 1541, after considerable effort, Veere was granted staple-rights to Scottish Wool for the Low Countries, encouraging Scottish merchants to establish themselves there on a permanent basis. In exchange, this Scottish community received special privileges: it had its own church (part of the main church of Veere), jurisdiction and special accommodation. It also received tax exemptions. The Scottish Houses functioned as offices, warehouses and living quarters. Date: 1928

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the tranquility of a bygone era, as an elderly couple enjoys a moment in the lush garden of a Scottish House in Veere, a historic city in the southwestern Netherlands. Nestled on the island of Walcheren in the province of Zeeland, Veere was once the principal port for Scottish wool traders in their dealings with the Dutch, from 1541 to 1799. During the early 16th century, trade between Scotland and Veere became increasingly significant, leading to the granting of staple-rights to Scottish Wool for the Low Countries. This paved the way for a permanent Scottish community to establish itself in Veere, which was afforded special privileges. They were granted their own church, jurisdiction, and unique accommodations, as well as tax exemptions. The Scottish Houses served as offices, warehouses, and living quarters for the merchants. The Scottish connection to Veere dates back to 1541, when the city was granted staple-rights to Scottish Wool. This photograph, taken in 1928, offers a glimpse into the rich history of this unique Scottish community that once thrived in the heart of the Netherlands. The Scottish Houses, with their distinctive architecture, stand as a testament to the strong trading ties that once existed between Scotland and Veere.
