EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking twin portrait captured by the renowned photographer Madame Yevonde in 1929, we find the Marchioness of Douro, Lady Cecilia Anne Victoria Wellington (1890-1964), and her daughter, Lady Anne Wellesley, later Lady Anne Maud Rhys (1910-1998). The Marchioness, who was the wife of the 5th Duke of Wellington from 1934, is depicted in elegant sophistication, her regal bearing and refined features exuding an air of aristocratic grace. Her daughter, Lady Anne, is equally captivating, her youthful beauty and poised demeanor a testament to her upbringing in the upper echelons of British society. The twin portrait format was a popular trend during this era, allowing for a visual comparison and contrast between mother and daughter. In this instance, Yevonde masterfully captures the likenesses while highlighting the unique characteristics of each woman. The portrait was taken at Strathfieldsaye, the family estate in Berkshire, where the Marchioness and Lady Anne would have spent much of their time. Madame Yevonde, born Eileen May Quinn, was a pioneering figure in British photography, known for her innovative techniques and artistic vision. She would later become famous for her Goddesses series, featuring Lady Anne in several portraits as the goddesses Venus and Aphrodite. This early portrait, however, showcases the photographer's ability to capture the essence of her subjects in a more traditional yet captivating manner. The image offers a glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy during this period, showcasing the beauty, elegance, and refinement that defined the peerage class. The portrait remains a testament to the enduring legacy of Madame Yevonde and the subjects she immortalized through her lens.
